Using the Learning Commons

The Learning Commons has three aims:

①To support and promote independent student learning and active learning
②To provide a place where students can engage in learning interactions with other students and with a diverse range of people
③To support students in collecting and utilizing information from an international perspective

How to reserve a facility

302&303

Free to use (no reservations required)

304 - 309 (Capacity: 1-4 people)

Reserve directly via Web Nadeshiko (maximum of 2 hours per reservation up to a total of 4 hours per day)

301 (Capacity: 30 people),310 (Capacity: 10 people)

For exclusive use, an Application to Use Learning Commons must be submitted at least three business day prior to date of use.


Note: The application form should be emailed to the Support Office for Learning Community (solc@slcn.ac.jp). Handwritten forms should be submitted to the Academic Support Counter.

The Learning Commons is a place for learning. Please show consideration for others.
In accordance with "living with COVID-19" protocols, please refrain from using the facilities if you have a fever or are feeling unwell and observe the following:

  • Ensure thorough hand hygiene.
  • Always wear a mask.
  • Do not sit facing or immediately next to other people.
  • Keep a distance of at least 2 meters from other people.
  • Do not obstruct ventilation through doors and windows.
  • Wear headphones and earphones for online lectures and classes.

Adhere to the rules posted in the Learning Commons.

The following are prohibited:

  • Bringing in strong smelling food or eating noisily;
  • Bringing in liquids that are not sealed (in containers without lids, canned juices, soups and soupy meals);
  • Sleeping on the sofa; and
  • Talking loudly.

Use of equipment

The Learning Commons provides equipment on loan. The application form (same as the library application form) should be submitted at least three working days before the date of use.

Lukaco Desk

The Academic Support Counter in room 302 provides assistance with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, help with use of citations and bibliographies, and general advice on using computers and the internet and other general information about the university. Personal sessions are also available via the Lukaco Desk. Personal sessions are held online (using Google Meet) at a date and time to be arranged in advance. The form should be submitted at least three working days in advance. If you have any study-related questions that you are not sure who to ask, contact us and we can refer you to relevant department or individual.
